More Than Our Skin
“More Than Our Skin” was a film for which I did the graphic design. I was hired to create a unique logo and a poster design that resonated with the five women the film is about. This logo design was created using all five women's hands in the shape of a heart. The idea came from how compassionate the women are with each other. I met with them and spoke with them, which inspired me. Purple is the color for vitiligo, and the specific shade i used was inspired by one of the women’s lipstick colors she typically wore for appearances for the film.
“More Than Our Skin” is a documentary exploring the depths and effects of living with Vitiligo. Vitiligo is an auto-immune disease in which the skin loses its pigment cells resulting in discolored patches throughout the body. People with the condition not only experience high levels of depression but also suffer from social stigmatization and isolation. The result, often, manifests as shame, avoidance of intimacy, and in far too many cases – suicidal ideation.
This poster design was created by showcasing all five women that are in the film. I was able to scroll through many photos that were taken during the filming process. There was one photo I came across that was a bunch of scattered photo frames with a woman with vitiligo in the middle. This photo inspired me to use various styles of photo frames for each woman. This showcases how different each of them is but how similar they are at the same time (the purple backgrounds).
